Newtonian Society presents Swedes in STEM - Mackenzie Callison '20

March 9, 2023

Mackenzie Callison, an alum of ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College from the Class of 2020, graduated with a degree in Biology. During her tenure, Mackenzie played on the soccer team and was a Key Club and FCA member.

After graduating, Mackenzie became a lab technician in a forensic toxicology lab doing fetal and infant drug testing. After several months of lab experience, she obtained her dream position as a histotechnologist for Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Ill. In this role, Mackenzie works with pathologists to help diagnose diseases at the tissue and cellular levels. Mackenzie is also considering graduate school to become a pathology assistant and further her involvement in the field.

As Mackenzie explains, the skills she developed at ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College, such as organization and prioritization, helped set her up for success in her professional career. In addition to mastering subject-specific knowledge, exposure to invaluable life lessons learned from her professors and other members of the ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College community was a big part of her education.

The foundations that Mackenzie had the opportunity to build at ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ and the connections she made have been beneficial beyond her time as a student. Whether it's a classmate for networking, a professor for advice, or local people for support, Mackenzie advises current and future ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ Science and Math majors to take advantage of the college's resources.

Mackenzie emphasizes the importance of gaining as much experience and exposure to the field you are interested in as possible, which will give you a better understanding of the job and be beneficial during interviews.

Ultimately, Mackenzie encourages current and future science and math students to use ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College's resources and create long-lasting relationships with students and professors that will benefit their professional lives.

Swedes in STEM was created by the ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College Newtonian Society (Math and Science Club) to spotlight ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ Alumni with a Math/Science Degree. Our goal is to recognize our Alumni's achievements post-graduation, as well as provide a valuable resource to students currently pursuing a degree in STEM. A display is also located outside of Nelson Lecture Hall.

LINDSBORG, KS. MAY 6, 2025 — As ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College celebrates the accomplishments of the Class of 2025, one graduate's walk across the stage represents an unfinished dream now fulfilled more than five decades later. In 1970, Marilyn Allen Peterson was just one class away from earning her degree in elementary education from ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College. But when her husband, Dr. Thomas Peterson (´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ Class of 1968), was called into military service during the Vietnam War, the couple relocated to Arizona with little notice. In the midst of the move, Marilyn was unable to complete her final requirement: a single science elective. Earlier this year, Dr. Peterson contacted ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College to share his wife’s story and asked a simple question: Could she still finish what she started? Thanks to the efforts of faculty and staff who dug into old catalogs, found the transcripts stored on microfilm, and brainstormed creative solutions for completing that final requirement, we are proud to say: yes, she could—and she did. With her final credit completed, Marilyn became eligible to receive her degree. At age 76, Marilyn Allen Peterson officially joins the ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College Class of 2025. During Commencement, she was recognized with heartfelt applause from the entire ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ community. "Marilyn, on behalf of ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College, we celebrate your dedication, your patience, and your enduring Swede spirit," said Dr. Laura Crawley, President of ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College. "Let this moment remind us all that it’s never too late to finish what we start, and that some of the most meaningful victories are the ones that take a little longer to reach." Marilyn’s story is not only a tribute to personal perseverance, but also a testament to the lifelong bonds formed at ´óÏ㽶µ¼º½ College and the value of returning to one’s roots to complete the journey.
